Calcium is an important mineral for keratin stabilisation and for the strength of the hoof wall. Research has shown that calcium deficiency can cause the hoof band to weaken, crack and become brittle.

Zinc is an essential building block for the hoof. Zinc is an essential component of all metal enzymes that are needed for protein formation.

Amino acids form the protein building blocks, important components of the substance.

The hoof is a highly specialised horn shell made up of 3 layers: an outer, a middle and an inner layer. The hoof encases sensitive bones, nerves, connective tissue and vessels. Its main function is to protect the underlying structures and to increase the surface area for the distribution of locomotion forces. So the hoof is the foundation of the horse.
